PSYCHOLOGICAL PECULIARITIES OF BEHAVIOR IN THE FAMILY CONFLICTS AMONG MARRIED COUPLES IN MIDDLE ADULTHOOD

Abstract

The article describes the psychological peculiarities of behavior in family conflicts of married couples
in the age of middle adulthood. The reasons, factors, functions of family conflicts, specificity of constructive
and destructive conflicts are analysed. The conflict has been seen as a collision of significant, competitive
or incompatible needs, motives, interests, actions of interaction participants. It has been identified
the causes of married couple conflicts such as unmet need, different perceptions of family values, breakdown
in communication in a couple. Transition periods of family circle, participants’ individual peculiarities,

the character of communication in a couple are defined among family conflict factors. It is examined
that a quarter of female respondents have such dominant strategies as “avoiding” and “accommodating”.
A quarter of men prefer the “adaptation” strategy. More than a fifth of both men and women prefer
“accommodating” strategy, which allows them solve family conflicts productively. As the least typical
strategies respondents define a “compromising” and “competing”. A set of basic recommendations
for prevention and constructive solving of family conflict by married couples is formulated.
